some pics from halloween at the smart house. this year we did a scarecrow theme with hay covering the front yard and a row of cornstalks set up. the trick/treaters had to pass the zombie farmgirl and scarecrow, then head up the row past me (as another scarecrow) to get to sam and samuel for the candy....we set up a strobe/fog machine in the center to add to the spooky factor. it was a huge success, we had probably 150-200 kids come through....
the shirt is a simple burlap and i sewed raffia to garden gloves. the hood is burlap with lots of stitching details. (step outs to create it can be found in my sandbox serendipity blog)
i made two of this type of mask - one for chase and one for me. the mouth is closed on these
samuel's job was to lie on the ground and pretend to be fake, a stuffed dummy. then when the kids hesitated to get close to sam, he would reach out and grab an ankle. this is his fave job - playing dead
maria and chase sat at the entrance, on the driveway. chase played like a dummy, scaring them as they ran screaming out of the row. maria's job was to give candy to the little ones (we didn't make them go down the row) and tell the big ones to head through the corn to get their candy
we added a set of black crow wings to the ghoul and set him up on the mailbox. (the wings really can't be seen in the photo)
the reaper scarecrow was set up in the hay by the front tree, a black cat at his feet...
this is what the kids saw when sam took off his mask....freaked them out. the 'hair' is a hula skirt and the mask is latex glued to his face so it moves
samuel has a bit of a claustrophobic thing going on so he insisted on having a big open mouth on his hood. i backed the eyes and mouth with sheer black fabric so you could not see into it in the dark but you could breath and see out of it
samuel is sitting and chase (neighbor who volunteered to help out this year) is standing. the costumes this year were based on three scarecrows we have loved from tv - dr. who's human nature episode, supernatural's scarecrow episode and goosebumps' scarecrow walks at midnight. lighted bones helped trick/treaters make their way in the dark as the strobe/fog machine blasted into the row
she insisted on not wearing anything that covered her face...but was very convincing as the zombie farmgirl....notice the look is the same one from last year's vampire
this is the same "armature" i used for the reaper last year. originally a goofy frankenstein, each year i repurpose the armature (he is 7 ft tall)
this is the view from the driveway up the cornrows to the house
