some pics from halloween at the smart house. this year we did a scarecrow theme with hay covering the front yard and a row of cornstalks set up. the trick/treaters had to pass the zombie farmgirl and scarecrow, then head up the row past me (as another scarecrow) to get to sam and samuel for the candy....we set up a strobe/fog machine in the center to add to the spooky factor. it was a huge success, we had probably 150-200 kids come through....

photos of our spooky house on halloween night. i like to make a lot of our effects and props to keep costs down and add to the originality. plus then if i decide to change it out, i don't feel guilty for spending a lot of money. keeps my creative goth side busy....

the last school project 2007-2008

maria's group chose the book "the heart is a lonely hunter" for their final language arts project (only two girls, the other was a "no-show" for most of the project). the rubric was long with something like 9 points to cover including theme music (songs ranged from missing persons "words" to "man of constant sorrow" from the o'brother soundtrack).  these two girls work together beautifully, i sat with them a few times to make sure they were on track and pull them back when they wandered into teen girl land.  in addition to a power point, written explanations and the soundtrack, they had to create an "artwork" and also serve a food significant to the book or the author.  if you have ever read the book then you know food is not a major part.  they chose to serve the menu from the party mick has at her home (a prom party - prom meaning dance back in the 30's). they had biscuits (blueberry scones) and cookies, punch and pb&j sandwiches.  they gave out dance cards to all the girls and explained what they were.  maria and laura made up t-shirts for their presentation (which was supposed to represent a museum with curators). they gave the museum a name and put that on the shirt with "staff" on the sleeve.  an extra part of the presentation was having their classmates put on a set of noise blocking lawnwork headphones to mimic the silence of the main character, singer. then people would talk to that person and they had to try and figure out what was being said to them and the emotion of the speaker. there was a lot made about the interaction between the characters and singer in the book.

they also had to create a time capsule - because this book took place in the 30's, this was a bit of a challenge. instead of a traditional time capsule, maria chose to recreate Mick's hatbox from the book. it is a major part of her character - her most treasured objects. in the book there is a list of what was in the box so maria looked through our storage/old books/etc to find each item. we were fortunate to have items from my in laws that matched up. the box itself is a hatbox from sometime before 1950 i believe. the quote from the book is written on the inside of the box (again, clear sticker paper so it is easily removed)

the last part of the presentation was the artwork.  maria chose something a bit odd for this one - she used a case of jones soda, painted the case white and added quotes about the interaction between characters then added labels (avery clear sticker paper for inkjet) to the bottles also. she took a photo of a mime, printed it on transparency and inserted it into the bottle. there was more than just an 'altered' reason behind the piece. here is her 'explanation of artwork' and photos of the finished piece.

The altered art piece was inspired by Bottle Whimsies, a type of folk art created in the early 1900’s until the 1950’s. Artists would create scenes, erect models or insert framed photos in bottles of various shapes and sizes. Some of the artwork was politically inspired while others were based on popular objects of the time such as yarn winders. Those containing photographs usually memorialized someone in the life of the artist.
Our piece is all about Singer. Around the outside carton you will find quotes related to how the other characters in the book found solace, inspiration and joy visiting Singer in his room or at the café. He welcomed them although he didn’t understand most of what they said. They considered him their confessor, savior, friend or co-conspirator. The bottles represent the drinks each character shared with him – beer, lemonade, etc.
Each of the bottles is labeled with a character’s name. The quotes/image on the label relate to things that character said to Singer or thoughts they had about him. All of these “words” are on the outside of the bottle while Singer is trapped on the inside, unable to hear their words. He can read their lips and see their body language but cannot react/speak to them. Each character believes Singer is a kindred spirit – something that is completely untrue. Singer is printed on transparency to show that he is not really “there”, only in the minds of each character does he take on a personality. He is a shadow of his true self and would love only to be with his Greek friend. (the image of Singer is that of a mute mime for obvious reasons)

cell analogy project

some time ago, maria had to do a cell analogy poster for biology class. she was supposed to take an animal and plant cell diagram and relate the parts/functions to non-cellular things.  (example would be a vacuole is like a fridge because it stores food and water for an organism) she had to provide images of the comparison item, description of similarity and draw a line between the image and the cell part on the diagram.

this project was done on white posterboard, sprayed with gold and black webbing paint by krylon (to give it an organic feel and jazz it up). the images were printed on white presentation paper (hp) because it it thinner than cardstock, stands up to gluing and looks great with images. the lines are red yarn, held in place with glue dots.  the cell diagrams are really cool in person.  they are double printed on inkjet transparencies and photo paper.  the photo paper diagram was glued down first, then the red yarn strings were put in place. over the top of that, maria used glue dots pop dots (dimensional clear glue dots) to adhere the same diagram image in transparency over the photo paper one.  it gives the cells a 3D effect and protects the yarn placement on the cells.  in addition it allows you to see more clearly where the yarn line is pointing to (because there are so many lines, the diagram is nearly covered up).

this type of print over print method can be used for any type of image - the 3D effect can be subtle or dramatic depending on the way you print the images....

plug for an artist of a different genre....

my legal prof friend sent me an email today about a new movie available for purchase.  this movie was made by a friend of hers, a very talented young film maker she brags about all the time.  those of us who know her have lived (vicariously) through the process of getting this film made and "out" so we are all excited to finally get to see the product in real life.  check out the site, buy the film directly from Ethan (more profit for his production company) and support the 'little guy'!!!!  (as a mostly 'starving artist', i totally understand this!)

Suspension - the movie

sometimes it's ok when the project stays at school....

many times the teacher will ask to keep one of the kids' projects. sometimes it is ok (it is really big, not something we were going to keep, no expensive reusable items, etc) and sometimes we ask for it back but let the teacher know they can borrow it the following year for an example.

this was one project we weren't crazy about getting back....it was creepy.  didn't set out to be, it was just that the mask without the eyes seemed very horror movie to us. (ironic considering we love halloween) the end of the year is not here yet so it may still make its way home (a good plot for a horror movie, huh?)

this was a "greek" drama mask maria did for latin class. she used a full mask form (craft store in with feathers and such usually) and the plaster rolls from AMACO (like they use for casts). a few layers, dried pretty quickly and painted with acrylics. the hair is glued on (doll hair, craft store). she attached a piece of elastic to it for wear (word of caution, the plaster is sort of fragile so it will not take the abuse of having the elastic pulled tight over and over, reinforce the area where the elastic is attached)

the lips are white because she used diamond glaze over them and i took the photo before it dried (she leaves before 6am for the bus so i had to shoot it the night before). maybe i can get another shot of it if it returns ("it returns!" coming to theaters near you)

when the rubric calls for a cube...

another project. we look at the dreaded assignment rubric....this one called for a cube (yes, i see the pun...)
(rubric definition for those without school age kids)

this assignment was to create a cube where each side contained something different about a specific body system (maria had the respiratory system)

the cube could have been any size 6x6 or larger. because she wanted a solid base, we found a 'memory cube' at michaels (wooden cube) to build upon.  in the past we have used styro cubes and cube shaped boxes. these cubes seem to be a common type of assignment from elementary up to high school level.

the hardest part of this assignment was the info gathering....it took her over a week.  (most of the info was not in her bio book). then she had to come up with ways to get all that info on a 6x6 cube.  being a child of a crafter, she turned to my card/scrapbooking how to books to find ways to incorporate creativity with info (creativity was being graded also).

forgive the photos - it was a late night....
here is the cube finished:

side 1 - diagram the system with labels (had to be hand drawn but could be traced) maria used tracing paper and layered it over a printed label)

side 2 - description of the system. maria added an image in the background (opacity at 40%)

side 3 - compare the human system with that of another organism (maria did a bird). she used the file folder method to show the differences/similarities/diagram of alternate system

side 4 - list 5 diseases of this system (maria did a pop out page)

side 5 - describe how this system interacts with the other body systems (maria did a wheel for this one, as you turn the wheel, another system appears in the window)

side 6 - list 10 interesting facts about the system (maria did 11 by using the word respiratory and finding facts starting with each letter)

a first place ribbon!!!

maria won first place in the small models competition at the state JCL latin convention (JCL = junior classical league)!!!!

she was pretty excited about it - her mosaic and necklace garnered loads of praise also.

(yes, i am a proud momma....)

can you stand it? more school projects....

maria is attending the state latin convention this weekend and she decided to enter a few art projects into the contests....

mosaic - done on a 12x19 board, i don't have a photo of the finished piece but here she is working on it (they needed photo documentation along with written documentation showing they worked on it alone). the design is based on a project on the joy of shards site (roman guilloche ). she used tiles i had left over from previous projects - learning how to score, break and nip them to fit the design. the entire thing took a couple of days because of dry times and such....

next it was on to the apollo's laurel crown project. she took a skeletal leaf stamp and stamped onto copper embossing foil with a metal stamping ink (both from AMACO). then she cut out all the leaves and applied them with copper metal tape to a piece of 4 gauge copper wire. she bent the ends of the wire and wired them together with a 20 gauge copper wire to form the crown shape.  there was a bit of futzing with the leaves to get them to lay more naturally around the form....

lastly, there was the roman necklace..... maria was inspired by a piece of cold forged copper jewelry by Barbara Matthiessen (celtic dreams from Belle Armoire magazine). (she thinks barb is a metal goddess). she used the 4 gauge copper wire along with some fresh water pearls and an abalone pendant to create this piece (the rules were that the piece needed to be authentic with materials common in ancient rome and you could not use any man-made materials like premade beads)  here  are some step out pics and a pic of the final piece....

new stuff from one of my fave jewelry chicks!

cool earth wear

i picked up a couple of these at the last bead show - they are awesome! neutral but very funky!

one year later....

at last year's sewing expo, i bought these cool stone serpentine pendants, it was one of those times when it seemed perfect for a friend - it screamed her name.... i had an idea in my head but just could not put it all together...so they sat and mocked me.  unlike the stone leaf piece, which was bought and finished in the same week, these necklaces took almost exactly one year to complete.

the teal pendant i made for my friend's birthday. the purple one i kept. they are the same except for the pendant. the glass beads are this funky rectangular shape with a little point on either side - teal and purple. found them on the same trip as the stone leaf pendant and beads. when i saw them i knew immediately that they would work for the serpentines.  the pieces are strung with purple beading wire, which you can see in the weave. tiny purple seeds keep the twists straight.  i love the heart toggles, don't you?

wilma flintstone's got nothing on me...

i saw this stone leaf pendant and just had to have it...but finding beads to balance it out was a bit tough. in the end i decided on these large, irregular cut green stones. i like the whole 'wilma' effect, don't you? the clasp i found in a vintage findings booth at an intergalactic bead show...it is a funky copper hook/loop that seems to work best with heavier pieces. the added bonus was that it added length also. these were all the green stone beads i had so i needed an extra inch or so to get the pendant to hang at my throat hollow.  it isn't as heavy as it looks although it does have a heft to it.  it is one of those statement pieces i guess as you can't really wear something busy with it....
